Abstract

- We examined charge retention by ruthenium trisbipyridine dications, Ru(bpy)32+, soft-landed onto self-assembled monolayer (SAM) surfaces.
- In situ time-resolved secondary ion mass spectrometry experiments were performed using a Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance instrument.
- Charge retention of the doubly charged precursor ion is observed on the FSAM and COOH-SAM.
- Only singly charged Ru(bpy)3+ ions are observed on HSAM.
- Electron transfer through the insulating SAM is responsible for the charge loss by permanent ions.
