► Hold conditions of whole blood affect the fresh frozen plasma microparticle content. ► Platelet-derived microparticles increase with longer hold time. ► Phoshatidylserine-positive microparticles increase with longer hold time. ► Plasma lipid peroxidation is donor‐related. ► Effect on clinical efficacy of plasma transfusion needs further investigation.
