Abstract

This paper presents a computational modelling of the shot peening process, in which the finite element method was employed to study the elastic–plastic dynamic process of shots impacting on a metallic target, and the discrete element method was used to study the multiple particles dynamics. The results demonstrated the capability of the method to capture realistic behaviour including the interaction between incoming shots and rebounding shots. Statistical analyses of the shots impact data reveal the relationships between peening process parameters and peening quality, which are useful for identifying the parameters which need to be controlled and regulated in order to produce a more beneficial compressive residual stress distribution within the target.
