Abstract

If the earthquake damages are examined, it can be seen that structures which have overhangs are damaged more than the others. This fact creates a research interest in Turkey where 70–80% of buildings have overhangs. Although overhang direction and length must be designed by considering seismic loads and design rules are given in Turkish Earthquake Code (TEC), most of the buildings are not constructed properly. In this paper, effects of overhang direction and length to earthquake resistance of buildings are studied. Analyses are made and examples are given from existing structures in Eskisehir, Turkey. Also precautions are given for constructing structures with overhangs. Model solutions show that eccentricity increases as the overhang length increases and eccentricity value is affected by unit weight of materials which are used in overhangs.
