Abstract
The biobanks or centers for biological ressources are pivotal for translationnal research projects. These structures are granted in France by recurrent public financial supports aiming to establish collections of biological samples for research project developments. More than 100 biobanks have been set up in different public hospitals or in different comprehensive cancer centers in France. The onset of new technologies and of new methods for analyses in medical research fields induced a profound shift in routine practices and created new scientific challenges for the collect and the storage of human samples. Rising to these challenges is now a major issue for the biobanks. Setting up a dynamic strategy to anticipate the future user needs is essential and it is based on new operating modes. This review describes the short and median term challenges for the biobanks in France and proposes some ways to meet them.
