Abstract
Free living amoebae: an unrecognized risk Free living amoebae are ubiquitous protozoa found in water environments. They can be responsible for serious but exceptional diseases, such as primary amoebic meningoencephalitis caused by Naegleria fowleri and granulomatous amoebic encephalitis due to Acanthamoeba sp or Balamuthia mandrillaris. In contrast, Acanthamoeba keratitis are more frequently reported, often related to the use of contact lenses. Moreover, free living amoebae can be hosts for other microorganisms (bacteria, fungi, viruses.), representing a way of protection and a training field for their survival in macrophages. Amoeba found in water systems can thus assume the role of a reservoir of potential pathogens and be indirectly related to various infections.
