Abstract
The presence of ESBL-producing strains of Enterobacteriaceae has been reported in hospital effluents, in wastewater treatment plants that receive hospital effluents and downstream of these plants, both in developing countries and in developed countries. ESBL strains are also found in rivers downstream of wastewater discharge points, which shows that human activities have an impact on aquatic ecosystems in terms of multidrug resistance. As surface water is directly used for watering crops and in some countries, for animal and human consumption, there is urgent need to develop and promote effective treatments of wastewater to break the spiral of multidrug resistance.
