Abstract
The evolution towards gastric cancer can be due to genetic factors, e.g. polymorphisms of certain cytokine genes, to environmental factors (salt consumption, meat diet…) but the bacterial factors have a major role. Some H. pylori strains harbor a pathogenicity island, the so-called cagPAI, and produce the CagA oncoprotein which modifies the epithelial cell signaling pathways and is essential in the cell transformation.
