Abstract
Diabetic nephropathy is the first cause of end stage renal disease. The natural history of diabetic nephropathy was first defined for type 1 and type 2, but it was recently describe that some patients can develop end stage renal disease without presenting macroalbuminuria. Microalbuminuria is the preferred marker for screening diabetic nephropathy. Some new markers are currently studied in order to diagnose diabetic nephropathy earlier in its development.
