Abstract
All compartments of the kidney can be affected by drug induced nephrotoxicity. Different mechanisms of drug induced acute kidney injury (AKI) can be described such as prerenal AKI, tubulopathies, interstitial nephritis, glomerulonephritis, vascular nephropathies, crystalluria etc. Drug induced nephrotoxicity is multifactorial. A number of factors enhance the vulnerability of the kidney to the nephrotoxic effects of drugs. They are broadly categorized as patientspecific, kidney-related, and drug-related factors. Drug-induced kidney disease occurs primarily in patients with underlying risk factors. Recognizing risk factors, using preventive strategies and avoiding nephrotoxic medications are the first steps in reducing the renal complications of drugs.
