Abstract
The French national laboratory network “Biotox-Piratox” is a component of national contingency plans to safeguard populations. It draws on the lessons of the 2001 anthrax crisis, to ensure optimum use of analytical capabilities of national laboratories. The overall network is divided into three levels of competence, sentinel laboratories, laboratories in azonal defense area, and national reference laboratories. It puts at the disposal of local and national authorities flexible and appropriate response tools against alerts or malicious acts involving biological agents, or chemical warfare products, as well as industrial chemicals.
