Abstract
The discovery of one or several cytopenias upon blood differential is highly suggestive of myelodysplasia. To confirm this hypothesis, further morphological examinations of peripheral and medullary blood cells are currently performed, together with karyotypic investigations. Over the past 15 years significant progress have been achieved in the multiparametric examination of hematopoietic cells in flow cytometry, thus opening a new type of investigations to characterize MDS. Here are reviewed the anomalies most reported in the literature allowing to sustain a diagnosis of MDS. It remains however quite necessary to standardize these approaches in view of a broader application in clinical laboratories. Consensus conferences are on the way with this promising objective.
