Abstract
Formalin is the key molecule in tissue fixing for over a century. However, the recent classification of formalin as carcinogen agent and new requirements of molecular diagnostics have revived interest in formalin free fixatives. It is a broad family of extremely heterogeneous products. This article describes the main modes of action of these products and provides a simple classification to guide the choice of the best fixative to be tested according to the objectives sought.
