Abstract
In the last decades, viral hepatitis has emerged from obscurity as a disease, to being recognised as a major public health problem worldwide, responsible of chronic liver disease and hepatocellular carcinoma. Five different hepatitis viruses (hepatitis A to E virus) cause liver disease in humans. All five cause acute hepatitis, while hepatitis B, C, D viruses can lead to a persistent infection and chronic hepatitis. The role of histological analysis of liver biopsies consists of evaluating deleterious consequences of persistent viral infection.
