Abstract
Blood gas analyzers equipped with a CO-oxymetry module are automated apparatus able to measure simultaneously and precisely the different derivatives of hemoglobin: oxyhemoglobin, deoxyhemoglobin, carboxyhemoglobin (COHb), methemoglobin (MetHb) and sulfhemoglobin (SulfHb). Thus, CO-oxymeters, interfaced or integrated with blood gas analyzers, are able to provide comprehensive oxygenation status, and to orientate the diagnosis of pathologies related to increased hemoglobin derivatives (COHb, MetHb, SulfHb). Hb fractions are measured and quantified using absorption spectrophotometry and results interpretation may be tricky taking into account that interferences may alter the results.
