Abstract
Fracture loads of ceramic components with rounded notches cannot be computed by linear elastic fracture mechanics techniques because no stress singularity exists. We propose a procedure to estimate such fracture loads, which is based on the cohesive zone model and supported by experimental evidence with alumina, zirconia and silicon ceramics. Data from 18 ceramic materials and different notched geometries were used. The only material parameters needed were the tensile strength and the fracture toughness.
