Abstract
•Water box nozzle, made of cast precipitation-hardened stainless steel failed in wear.•Lower hardness and improper micro structure confirmed that the material did not undergo proper heat treatment after casting.•Based on the failure analysis a heat treatment cycle was recommended.•Significant improvement in hardness value was observed after heat treatment.
