Abstract
Significant progress has been made over the past two decades in adoption of green chemistry within small molecule divisions of pharmaceutical companies. Despite these advances significant sustainability challenges have appeared related to the emerging trend of many companies outsourcing pharmaceutical development and manufacturing. In addition, limited progress has been made developing and adopting sustainable processes in generic industries. Some current best practices in sustainable chemistry are highlighted and practical solutions are proposed which could incentivize adoption of green chemistry in the global pharmaceutical and generic industries.
