Abstract

A modified linear elastic fracture mechanics analysis is presented for the evaluation of the crack growth and threshold behavior of small cracks initiated from small defects under combined loading fatigue. For the detailed evaluation of the behavior of small fatigue cracks, the Kitagawa effect, the elastic–plastic behavior of cracks in biaxial stress fields and crack closure effects are taken into account. In-phase and out-of-phase combined tension and torsion fatigue tests were conducted using annealed carbon steel specimens containing small holes. The direction of crack propagation, S–N curves and fatigue limits were found to be in good agreement with the theoretical predictions.
