► Nonstoichiometric Nb-substituted SrTiO3 compounds. ► Comparison of previously reported defect chemistry with obtained experimental results. ► A-site vacancy formation is more probable than previously reported B-site vacancy. ► Sr-deficiency/excess in SrTiO3 influences structural and electrical properties. ► Sr-deficiency limits the undesired Sr diffusion from anode into YSZ electrolyte.
