Methyl jasmonate and Echinothrips americanus regulate coumarin accumulation in leaves of Matricaria chamomilla

► Umbelliferone and herniarin have been identified as stress metabolites in chamomile. ► Herniarin is known to be released from its glycosidic precursor. ► The precursor is (E)-2-ß-d-glucopyranosyloxy-4-methoxy cinnamic acid. ► Methyl jasmonate as well as Echinothrips americanus evoked dramatic increase in the content of the glycoside. ► However, the accumulation of aglycones was affected only slightly.
