Abstract

This paper is a review of literature which considers the theory put forward by Dr. Carl Salomon in 1931 that the temperature created by cutting metal increased with cutting speed up to a certain point and then started to decrease as the cutting speed continued to climb. The conclusion is that the theory is not valid for the tool–work interface temperature, but could be true for the surface temperature of the workpiece. More research needs to be carried out to verify this.
