Abstract

In the present study, a double-layer foam cladding is proposed to fulfill different structural protection purposes. The energy absorption capacity of the double-layer foam cladding under blast load is analytically derived based on a rigid-perfectly plastic-locking foam model. Different configurations of the layered foam cladding are studied. The maximum absorbed energy and the maximum blast impulse that can be resisted by the cladding are calculated. Numerical simulation with finite element method is also carried out. Good agreement is found between the analytical and the numerical results. The present analytical solution of the energy absorption capacity of the double-layer foam cladding can be effectively used for sacrificial foam cladding design.
