This paper deals with an experimental study carried out to investigate the influence of DC electric fields on the performance of a fin and tube evaporator under frosting conditions. Several experiments are carried out measuring frost mass, air-side pressure drop and cooling capacity for different applied voltage, air velocity and evaporation temperature. Results show that the electric field reduces the frost mass and air-side pressure drop whereas it increases the cooling capacity. Finally, with a superimposed electric field, the overall energy consumption of the refrigerating unit reduces when referred to the same refrigerating effect.
► Frost formation on finned evaporator with electric field is experimentally studied. ► Frost mass reduction, air side pressure drop and cooling capacity are measured. ► Air side pressure drop reduction and cooling capacity increase are found. ► Overall electrical energy consumption reduces due to electric field influence.
