- Pitting precedes SCC in stainless steel under ultra-low load.
- FEM shows that the normal stress and strain concentrate at the pit shoulders.
- Most pits grow faster along the sample thickness direction.
- SCC initiates preferentially at the shoulders of the surface pits/defects.
