Abstract
Using the co-precipitated Nd:YAG and YAG powders as raw materials, the Nd:YAG/YAG composite ceramics (Ф 50â¯mmâ¯Ãâ¯5â¯mm) were prepared by vacuum sintering (1790â¯Â°C 50â¯h), followed by hot isostatic pressing (HIP) post treatment (1700â¯Â°C 2â¯h, 200â¯MPa Ar atmosphere) and air annealing (1250â¯Â°C 100â¯h). The optical properties of Nd:YAG/YAG samples were improved markedly by HIP post-treatment, mainly due to the elimination of residual pores in the samples. The composite sample showed a perfect bonding interface from Nd:YAG to YAG regions without obvious grain size difference, pores or other defects. This structure should be responsible for the thermal conductivity larger than that of non-composite sample. The composite sample revealed good optical properties with transmittance up to 83.9% at 1064â¯nm and 80.8% at 400â¯nm, and a maximum laser output power of 1.38â¯KW with the slope efficiency of 36.7% was obtained.
