Abstract

The deformation process of revolving closed-shell with multi-curvatures profile under internal pressures was investigated by experiments. Strain distribution and displacement at typical locations on the shell was measured. Results show that the zone with a negative curvature, i.e., the concave section, tends to change its curvature into positive. For the convex zones, the section with bigger curvature tends to reduce its value while the one with smaller curvature increases instead. According to the experimental result, a qualitative principle describing the forming behavior of the shell with general shapes is presented, which is essential not only for the manufacturing of shells with complex shapes but also for the structure design and optimization of closed-shells working under external or internal pressure.
