Abstract
Although the Moroccan climate is generally mild and temperate, both heating in winter and cooling in summer are required to reach comfort levels in different regions. The building energy consumption related to the heating and cooling can be reduced by several solutions like the use of suitable shading. This paper presents a study of the effect of overhangs and fins on the heating and cooling energy demand in the city of Marrakech. A simulation study has been performed by using the TRNSYS Simulation Program to determine therequired energy for heating and cooling depending on orientation of the window and the overhangs and fins dimensions. Furthermore, practical tables, to determine rates of cooling energy reduction by using overhangs, were established.
