Abstract
In this paper the feasibility is demonstrated of replacing the steel tower of an offshore wind turbine by a fibre-reinforced composite structure, with the aim of reducing installation and maintenance costs, and thereby the life cycle cost of the entire turbine. Design considerations regarding tower strength and flexibility, as well as manufacturability considerations, are discussed.
