Abstract
A mechanical system with impacts is investigated. It consists of a particle moving along a straight line and an absolutely elastic limiter. It is assumed that the motion is described by the Liénard equation in the intervals between impacts. Coefficient criteria for the existence of a chaotic invariant set, described by “symbolic dynamics”, are derived for the system considered.
