Abstract

A patterned method was proposed to realize large area fabrication of organic solar cells (OSCs) in series and parallel configurations. Series and parallel configurations of OSCs on ITO glass were designed and studied. Large open circuit voltage (VOC) was achieved in series OSCs, while the high short-circuit current (ISC) was achieved by using the parallel structure. A photovoltaic device composed of eight ITO/NiO/P3HT:PCBM/Al OSCs in series connection with area of 5×4 cm2, VOC of 4.35 V, ISC of 1.59 mA and power conversion efficiency of 2.08% was achieved. This device succeeded in driving a group of 11 light emitting diodes. In addition, this patterned method a device with VOC of 1.5 V and ISC of 18 mA succeeded in driving a small motor.

► A patterned method for OSC connections has been proposed and demonstrated. ► A device with a large VOC of 4.35 V and JSC of 7.96 mA has been fabricated. ► ISC and VOC can be enhanced in different connections. ► Patterned device can be large-scale fabricated easily. ► A group of LED and a motor have been driven by our devices.
