Abstract
Due to fabrication limitations, a periodic medium composed of loaded wire dipoles may have uncontrollable positional disorder. This disorder may change the electromagnetic characteristics of such a medium. Effects of positional disorder have been theoretically studied upon the effective permittivity of a composite medium containing resonant inclusions, i.e., loaded wire dipoles. It is observed that an increase in positional disorder blueshifts the resonance and the plasma frequencies of the medium. Also this increase may reduce the range of frequencies for which the real part of the effective permittivity of the medium is negative.
