Abstract

A systematic investigation of the effect of process parameters on evolution of superfinished surface texture is described. For a given stone, the surface roughness reaches a steady state value as the process proceeds, regardless of test conditions, in the rough finishing regime. An analysis of experimental surface roughness data indicates that this process characteristic can be well described by an exponential form of time dependence and the contact pressure has no effect on this time dependence. Optimal performance associated with higher material removal rate, fairly fine surface finish and less production time in rough superfinishing can be achieved using higher workpiece rotational speed and contact pressure.
