Abstract

The influence of heat treatment on the mechanical properties and texture of extruded Al–4.5 wt.% Cu alloy in the semisolid state was investigated, and its characteristics were compared with hot extruded Al–Cu alloy. The age hardening characteristics of the semisolid extruded Al–Cu alloy did not show a discernable change compared to the hot extruded. The tensile strength of semisolid extruded Al–Cu alloy was slightly higher than that of the hot extruded Al–Cu alloy, and the difference in their mechanical properties was increased after T6 treatment. The double fiber texture was developed in the hot extruded Al–Cu alloy bar. However, the specific texture in the semisolid extruded Al–Cu alloy was developed in the center with a tilt angle of 50°. This specific texture and equiaxed microstructure indicate that the deformation behavior of the semisolid extrusion was different from that of the conventional hot extrusion.
