Abstract

The metal flow in the wedge indentation of V- and W-shaped tools into a ductile material is investigated experimentally. The metal flow localizes near the wedge and forms the raised lip with a sharp edge in the wedge indentation into A1050-H. On the other hand, the metal flow that is displaced under the indenter is absorbed into the elastically deformed area of the surrounding material in the wedge indentation into A1050-O. There exists the extent of the metal flow under the tip of the sharp wedge. The extent of plastically deformed area in the wedge indentation into A1050-O is broader than that in the wedge indentation into A1050-H. The metal flow in wedge indentation is also analyzed by the finite element method. The calculated results of wedge indentation by FEM agree well with experimental ones.
