•Plane stress state phenomenon has been studied and a solution has not yet been described in the literature provided.•New specimen for biaxial tensile testing was introduced.•New test jig was introduced.
The objective of this study was to develop a new cruciform sample for a biaxial tensile test. The goal was to concentrate the plastic deformation in a gauge region. To achieve such a behaviour, arms of the cruciform sample were initially reinforced. To verify the proposed idea, a test rig was built, this allowed for the bi-axial tensile tests. The research was carried out on a cold-rolled DC5 steel specimen cut with a water jet. The sample, in its proposed shape, reaches almost 8% plastic strain before fracture and seems to be an interesting solution for further investigation.
