Abstract
Zirconia toughened alumina/SiC composites were prepared by hot pressing in vacuum under pressure of 30â¯MPa at 1500 up to 1650â¯Â°C. The effect of SiC content on the physical and mechanical properties of the sintered composites were studied in order to clarify the role of SiC on the properties of the above-mentioned composites. The composition of ZTA was always preserved as 85â¯vol% Al2O3 and 15â¯vol% ZrO2. Moreover, the phase composition and origin of the fracture failure of the studied composites were discussed. The results show an improvement in the composites mechanical properties with the addition of Sic. While the bodies' failure is originated from both surface and bulk defects.
