Abstract
A single-degree-of-freedom friction oscillator is subjected to rate dependent friction by applying a LuGre friction model. The resulting friction induced oscillations turn out to be chaotic for most parameter combinations in the regime of linear instability of steady sliding. It thus shows that rate dependent friction is very likely to lead to irregular response in friction self-excited vibrations.
