Abstract
Several eutectic barrier coatings for carbon-based sintering trays were evaluated for their ability to prevent carbon transfer. Three ferrous powder metal compositions were sintered on coated carbon/carbon composite sintering trays at three progressively higher temperatures in a standard sintering atmosphere. As a baseline, an uncoated carbon/carbon composite tray and a common graphite tray material were also evaluated. Coating appearance and weight loss, as well as sintered part hardness changes, were monitored. The performance of the various coatings is compared.
