Abstract
New perovskite type orange red emitting phosphors, SrGd(0.5âx)Nb0.5O3:xEu3+ were synthesized using a high temperature solid state reaction method. Powder XRD results confirm the orthorhombic perovskite type phase and detailed investigations on the photoluminescence and UV absorption studies indicated that Eu3+ doped SrGd0.5Nb0.5O3 phosphors has a strong absorption in the UV region. Intense orange red emission is observed for both near UV (392â¯nm) and blue (465â¯nm) excitations matching with the output wavelengths of UV and blue LED chips, which can be attributed to the magnetic and electric dipole transitions (5D0-7F1,2) of Eu3+. The emission intensity of phosphor under UV excitation is found to be much greater compared to that of blue excitation. Concentration quenching is observed at 7.5â¯mol% Eu3+ doping. The prepared intense orange red emitting phosphor with higher quantum efficiency could be a promising candidate for white light emitting diode applications.
