Abstract

The paper presents an analytical solution for inhomogeneous strain and stress distributions within solid spheres of Si1-xGexSi1-xGex alloy under diametrical compression. The method of solution employs the displacement function approach together with Fourier–Legendre expansion technique. The classical solution for isotropic spheres under the point loads is recovered as a special case. Numerical results show that the anisotropy of Si1-xGexSi1-xGex alloy causes increase of radial compressive strain and decrease of the tensile hoop strain along the axis of loading. It is interesting that the special anisotropy of Si1-xGexSi1-xGex gives an axisymmetric stress–strain state in a solid sphere under point loading.
