Abstract
This article presents a possibility to generate an inorganic binder in situ during processing of alumina powders for reduction of organic binders, which can contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions caused by their thermal decomposition. The new route consists of two steps: (i) mechanochemical modification of alumina powder surfaces induced by milling in basic aqueous medium for formation of nanometric particles of aluminum trihydroxides [Al(OH)3]; and (ii) hydrothermal treatment for conversion of aluminum trihydroxides to boehmite (AlOOH). The nanostructured boehmite binder improved alumina powder׳s plasticity for extrusion and increased strength of pre-sintered body.
