Abstract

A new, simplified method is described to evaluate the stability level of a strain-softening slope. This method was established via expanding the traditional slice method and proposing a simplified strain compatibility equation. The stability analysis of a homogeneous slope showed that the stability of a strain-softening slope is dependent not only on the strength parameters but also significantly on the stress–strain relationship of the soil. The safety factor and corresponding critical slip surface obtained using the present method locate between the ones obtained using the traditional slice method with the peak and residue strength parameters, respectively.
