Abstract
⺠Depending on the thermally grown oxide (TGO) surface crack may be stable or unstable. ⺠A damaged TGO can enhance the surface crack driving force. ⺠A relatively stiff TGO will delay the surface crack propagation. ⺠The surface crack propagation path is mainly governed by the elastic mismatch.
