Abstract
A numerical simulation of the nucleation and evolution of localized plastic deformation in welded low-carbon steel specimens was performed. A mathematical model based on a double-limit yield criterion was constructed to describe the propagation of Liiders bands. The behavior of 3D welded specimens characterized by a gradual or a stepwise change in the mechanical properties of the material in the heat-affected zone was investigated. The plastic deformation evolution pattern in the welded specimens was shown to depend on the mechanical characteristics of the material in the heat-affected zone and on the stress level near the grips of the testing machine and at the interfaces between the weld, heat-affected zone and base metal.
