Abstract
The paper is a brief review of contemporary notions about the role of crystal structure defects in the formation of the submicrocrystalline and nano structural state under severe plastic deformation. Emphasis is put on the experimental and model study of the role of point defects in these processes. The experiments carried out in recent years with the aid of the classic methods of physical research and modern nuclear physics methods show that the concentration of point defects after severe plastic deformation can be very high. We conclude that it is necessary to account for their role in the fragmentation of grain structure of metals and alloys. The possible evolution scenario of defects and grain-subgrain structure during severe plastic deformation is discussed.
