Abstract
We reconstruct the microscopic potential of specimen - substrate interaction which has no periodic contribution. We thus prove in a direct experiment that the micrometer spatial scale does not contribute to the friction force: the force is generated at a lower nanometer scale. This agrees with the earlier conducted tribospectroscopic studies and with the accepted notion that the friction force is scarcely affected by roughness.
