Abstract
► Thermal stabilities of the surface oxides of Sc in ultrahigh vacuum were clarified. ► The oxide on Sc surfaces decomposed at temperatures over 573 K. ► The Sc sample deuterated at room temperature presented an incubation time. ► Surface oxides play a crucial rule in the kinetics of Sc deuteride formation.
