Abstract

This paper proposes an novel face-hobbing method to generate spur gear with lengthwise crowning. Two head cutters form an imaginary generating rack with cycloidal lengthwise tooth traces that generating the cylindrical helical or spur gears with longitudinal cycloidal traces. The proposed cutting method is efficient for continuous-indexing cutting and the cutter blade travels longitudinally from one side face to the other that create smoother longitudinal cutting marks. Several numerical examples are presented to show the validation of the proposed longitudinal cycloidal crowned spur gear.
