Abstract
⺠A Blue Ribbon Task Force led the Marine Life Protection Act Initiative (2004-2011). ⺠Robust stakeholder involvement and strong science guidance were critical. ⺠Required formal designations by the California Fish and Game Commission followed. ⺠The number, size and restrictiveness of marine protected areas increased. ⺠The resulting network of MPAs is a rare accomplishment globally.
